Blanch the unpeeled garlic cloves in boiling water for 30 seconds. drain and prick each clove several times. Put garlic cloves into an empty wine bottle, add the sugar and pour over the vodka. Cork securely and leave for 2-3 months. When desired strength is reached, drain and rebottle. This will keep indefinitely.
Variations: substitute brandy for vodka; substitute gin for vodka, but double the sugar; a few strips of thinly peeled orange rind make a good addition.
