Customer Support Engineer
Originally brought in as a consultant release engineer, hired full-time to start their customer support department for an Internet startup developing a WAN data distribution and consolidation system with centralized management and policy structures including QOS structures, bandwidth management and authentication and security. My tasks included managing customer relationships, including being on-call 24x7; working with Systems Engineers to define and implement customer needs; working with Quality Assurance testing systems, developing test mechanisms, and fixing code bugs; and advising the engineering staff on supportability issues in the development stream. Also did product software development, continued to support release engineering, performed field service at customer sites, managed the CD-install code, managed the netboot server, and supported the Beta rollout. Work included programming in Expect, Perl, shell scripting, and C in a Linux environment from kernel to command-line to CGI.
Achievements:
- Developed and integrated automatic testing system to test software builds as soon as they completed
- Coded authentication mechanism for third-party MMS server
- Managed netboot system for software installations, including Perl scripting and CGI development
- Built local netboot servers for Systems Engineers and certain network segments
- Managed relationships with Beta sites, including travelling to sites and installing systems

Senior Network Manager
Completely responsible for all facets of network administration, management, maintenance, support, troubleshooting, planning and implementation for the American high-tech R&D facility of a South Korean musical instrument manufacturer. Network included multiple Linux, IRIX, SunOS, Solaris and HP-UX servers and workstations, as well as Novell Netware, Windows NT and 2000 servers, and PC and Macintosh workstations.
Achievements:
- Established live Internet connection over ISDN, migrated to fractional T1
- Designed and built firewall systems, mail gateway, internal NNTP and LDAP servers, and DNS server
- Migrated proprietary mail and conferencing systems to open standards, preserving all messages, and bridging systems while users moved over at their own pace; coded message migration and system mirroring tools
- Deployed PPTP VPN system for roving users
- Created static Cisco VPN between Waltham office and Inchon, South Korea, parent company and manufacturing facility; involved going to Inchon to bring them onto the Internet and configure their router to work with ours
- Coded HTML forms-based information sharing tools in C to facilitate international communication
- Coded mail migration tools in Expect (a Tcl dialect) and C
- Built internal conference search engine in Perl
- Patched and upgraded Netware, 98/NT/2000, IRIX and Sun systems, migrated systems from SunOS to Solaris

Unix System Administrator
Responsible for day to day operations and long-term planning for all Unix systems (SCO and Solaris/SunOS). Work included strategic planning, hardware and software upgrades and purchases, administration, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair, user training, support calls, porting programs, managing various Internet services, and writing software. Also supported the main EDC IT department in supporting company-wide network and user issues in a mixed Mac/PC/Novell environment.
Achievements:
- Managed international collaboration tools (mailing lists and BBS conferences)
- Ported Lynx, Majordomo, MMDF, Pine (my work can still be found in those packages), Gopher, and CERN HTTPD to SCO Unix
- Built EDC's first web site, established DNS service, mail service, Usenet service, and system gateways
- Handled second- and third-tier support issues for IT, in addition to first-level support for my department (LTT - Learning and Teaching Technology)
September 1991 - February 1993: DataQuest Corporation
Manager, MIS
LAN administrator for a 30 PC, 10 Mac, 10 printer single-server Novell Netware 3.11 network on 10BASE-T. Solely responsible for all aspects of network maintenance, including purchasing, specification, wiring, hardware, software, administration, training, and applications programming.

Programmer/Analyst
Worked from high school through the end of college, irregularly as education schedule allowed. Acted as LAN administrator, programmer, analyst, and user support technician. I helped them in early network efforts as well as did software development and analysis for both internal uses and external clients. I'm told that my code for the U. S. Forest Service is still running.
September 1987 - February 1988: Dorick Industries, Inc.
Chief Programmer
Member of the team that wrote an expert system for the Federal Judicial Center, part of the Federal Courts, to calculate sentences of federal offenders based on the U.S. Sentencing Commission Guidelines Manual, as an extension of the CEO's senior thesis. I was in charge of designing and programming the user interface, and assisting in the design and implementation of the logic. Involved extensive programming in C, and work in PROLOG.

Network Analyst and Database Programming Consultant
Mostly for family and friends, I do network analysis, system administration, database application programming (historically mostly in FoxPro, but more recently Access) and general programming (mostly C) in my spare time. Currently managing the roll-out of a contact management database for regional sales managers, using ACT!, Microsoft Terminal Services, and PPTP.
