The Dahlgren Gun
Adm. Dahlgren (Union Navy) designed a smoothbore cannon used on such
naval ships as the U.S.S Monitor at the Battle of Hampton Roads.
- Lord Armstrong, in England (1855), designed a siege cannon that
was used by the Confederate Army at such fortifications as Fort Fisher,
NC.
- Captain Blakely, in England, deisgned a cannon, used by SC,
which guarded Charleston Harbor and attacked Fort Sumter in April, 1861.
- Lt. Rodman (Union Army) developed a cannon for defense which
guarded Washington D.C. and Northern Virginia against a Confederate Army
invasion.
Siege cannons had large bores, heavy shells, fired long distances, and
were used by the Union Army against cities such as Atlanta, GA...
