The C.S.S. Stonewall Jackson/Gunboat
The C.S.S. Stonewall Jackson was involved in the battle of New Orleans
and destroyed the Varuna (Union Navy) before it was burned.
- The C.S.S. Selma, engaged during the Battle of Mobile Bay, was
taken prisoner by the U.S.S. Metacomet and converted to a Union Navy ship.
- The U.S.S. Housatonic was destroyed by the C.S.S. Hunley, whose
torpedo spar sank the gunboat on Feb. 17, 1864.
- The U.S.S. Lexington sieged Paducah and Smithland, KY, stopped
the Confederate Army offensive in KY, and was invilved in the Red R. campaign.
...Many of these ships were refitted with heavy oak timbers and iron
plating that protected the paddle wheelers and gunports...
